The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus has undertaken a strategic initiative in the Campus Safety and Preparedness Facility. The facility accommodates the immediate and long-term safety needs of a growing campus while becoming the campus’ first net zero energy building. The building provides a new, consolidated headquarters for the campus safety and preparedness team including Police Operations, Electronic Security, Emergency Communications, and Emergency Management.

Working within the framework of the CU Anschutz Medical Campus 2012 Facilities Master Plan, the project embraces the urban zone characteristics of the campus fabric outside of the core academic campus. The facility improves the arrival experience at this important gateway to the campus and embraces a connection with the Art Walk, signaling the eastern edge of this important campus place.

The program consists of offices, open offices, conference rooms, training space, a fitness space, storage, commons areas and supporting restroom and break areas. Building 610 — built in 1981 — occupied the site. AMD's design renovated the existing one-story facility and the addition of a second level, along with a new two-story bar constructed along 17th Place.

It gets [campus police] into a state-of-the-art, Net Zero police facility, which I’m happy to say will be the first Net Zero Energy building that the entire CU system has. I’m proud of that..."
