Western Wyoming Community College l Expansion

Once a collection of single-story buildings lacking any symbolic relationship to their setting, the campus of Western Wyoming College is now a cultural landmark that dramatically emerges from its site high on the bluffs overlooking the Town of Rock Springs. Particularly arresting is the academic wing that stretches across the mesa and cradles a dynamic glass-enclosed Commons.

This project began with two concurrent studies: a full inventory of all existing spaces, addressing both quantitative and qualitative issues, and an extensive program planning effort involving user interviews, academic utilization analyses, and detailed space descriptions. A long range master plan was then created, followed by design, documentation and construction.

Features include food service, student union, library, child care, swimming pool, recreation facilities, performing arts, science, engineering, classroom, trade shops, student support, administrative, computer, data, and exhibit facilities; a telecommunications center; a 586 seat auditorium, and two lecture halls.

The performing arts center was designed in consultation with Ling Tung, musical director of the Hong Kong symphony orchestra, to accommodate performances of the Teton Music Festival, of which he is also the director, for its summer program.
