Academic Building 1, the Student Commons Building, is a neighborhood gateway and social hub for University of Colorado Denver, built along Speer Boulevard between Auraria Parkway and Larimer Street in downtown Denver. The building houses three primary program components: lecture halls of varying sizes and configuration, academic department office space and Student Services and Affairs functions (Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Bursar, Counseling, Tutoring) that were spread out across the Auraria campus and downtown.

The building establishes an urban edge on the Auraria Higher Education Center campus. The program organization and stacking within the building is strategic in placing programs that activate the ground level along Larimer Street and Speer Boulevard by leveraging public spaces to promote social occurrences and encounters derivative of the academic and student services transactional activities. The building’s massing is strategically configured to frame views to the Tivoli tower and Mount Evans from downtown. A new visitor center provides prospective students and incoming freshmen with an immersive introduction to the university’s presence and role within the city and downtown landscape.
