Denver Public Schools | Joe Shoemaker Expeditionary School

The new Joe Shoemaker Expeditionary School embraces its proximity to a primary city waterway while creating a state-of-the-art school embodying the district’s newly adopted 21st Century Learning Principles.

The site—on open space adjacent to Cherry Creek—offers access to natural wildlife, lifecycle processes, and rare remnant ecology dating back to the time when the Front Range was a prairie. Courtyards between ES pods serve as outdoor classrooms with connections to Cherry Creek. The proposed storm water infrastructure for the site includes an outfall structure and pond configured to serve as an amphitheater.

The gymnasium will serve as the school ‘agora’ or gathering place during student’s morning arrival and afternoon departure – a place where classmates and comrades celebrate their community. As a weekend facility, the gym will act as the recreation amenity once planned for the local neighborhood.

This project connects a visionary new educational facility to a rare and authentic natural setting within urban Denver.
